Chapter 6: Beast From Air

Dear diary,

It was late and everyone was tired, Simona and I carried the Littluns to the shelters before we go to sleep. Of course Sam and Eric have fallen asleep instead of watching the fire, but I don't think that there are going to be any passing planes in the night. Eventually, they wake up to tend the fire again, then they run back to the shelters claiming that they saw the beast in the trees. I call for an emergency meeting so everyone can hear what the twins are saying, they even said that the beast even assaulted them! Since a lot of the boys want all of this beast nonsense over with, they organize and expedition to search the island for monsters. They set out armed with wooden spears and leave Piggy and the Littluns behind.

I allow them to start a search because I want of this beast stuff to be over with and allowed Jack to be the leader of the search party. We walk along a thin path in the unknown into an unknown part of the wood that we have not been in before. There are son thin hills that are dotted with small caves, the other boys are afraid to search the caves but so I decide to go alone. While I am exploring the cave, by myself, I begin to regain my confidence and Jack also joins  me in the cave.

I feel as if Jack and I are slowly starting to get of the hot water in our friendship because we have been a little more time together. After we climb the hill, the boys begin to play and forget the whole reason why we are on the expedition. I start to get mad at them because we're supposed to be looking for the beast not be playing and that we must go back to the other mountain to rebuild the signal fire. I hate to have to be the tough guy, but if we want to catch the beast and get rescued, everyone is going to have to start listening to me.

Chapter 5: Beast From Water

Dear diary,

The boys have stopped following the rules and are completely ignoring their responsibilities. They're not tending to the signal fire anymore, not gather clean drinking water, they refuse to help build the shelters, and don't use the designated toilet area. Everything seems to be falling into chaos. The Littluns are still having nightmares about the beasts and monsters and nothing seems to be shaking them of this belief. They're having nightmares every night and all you can hear is the echoes of their cries on the beach. It's getting hard to be a respected leader when no one will listen to the rules that will help them survive another day on the island.

Jack. Don't even get me stated with him, all he ever wants to do is go hunting with his boys. He is the one in charge of the fire, it's starting to make me feel as if he doesn't want to be rescued. I try to come the Littluns by telling them that there are no monsters or beasts on the island, that it's all just nightmares in their heads. I try to come the boys by telling them that are no monsters on the island but no one seems to be listening to me. Jack finally agreed with me on the matter of whether or not the beast exists, because it doesn't!

Annoyingly one of the Littluns says that he actually say the beast, everyone asks him when he had seen and why they can't see it during the daytime. He says that he thinks that the beast lives in the ocean at night. This idea terrifies all the boys and the meeting plunges into chaos. Jack offers to take his hunters into the woods and hunt down and kill the beast. All of a sudden Piggy, Simon, and I are left and Piggy suggests that I blow the conch to call them back but no one will listen since they all want the beastie gone. Am even the leader anymore?

Symbols

The Fire:

In the Lord of the Flies the fire is the one thing that the boys use to signal passing ships and boat to let them know that someone lives there and may need to be rescued. Jack and his hunters are in charge of always keeping the fire burning just in case if there is a passing ship or plane, they will be rescued. Jack and hunter are in charge of always keeping the fire burning, more specifically, Sam and Eric. The fire symbolizes of hope of getting of the island and getting to see their families again. When the fire went out, all of the boys lost all hope of being saved and didn’t care whether or not they would be saved.

 

The Glasses:

The glasses originally belonged to Piggy. The glasses symbolize vision and thinking because when you think of glasses you immediately think of someone who is smart, like Piggy. Besides Piggy using them, Jack used them to start the fire for their rescue but they ended up broken after he slapped Piggy in the face and one of the lenses broke. 

The Face Paint:

The Hunters are the only ones that use the face paint, but Jack is the only one who really seem to be affected by the face paint. It symbolizes savagery because it masks the humanity within all of us and turns us into to some that is unrecognizable, even to ourselves. Jack was mostly effected by this change in character because before they crashed on the island he was a goody-two-shoes and now is a completely different kid. In a way to the boys the face paint makes them feel brave because they were all doing something that they wouldn't normally being doing back home. I guess the island really did effect the boys.

Chapter 4: Painted Faces and Long Hair

Dear Diary,

It's me again, things are starting to get a little difficult on the island. The Littluns are still having nightmares about the "beastie" and since they aren't tall enough, they are eating the bad fruit from the trees since they are too short to reach the ripened ones. Two of the older boys, Roger and Maurice, are bullying the Littluns all for fun and games. Jack is being obsessed with killing a pig more and more every day that it's starting to make him go crazy. 

Today Piggy and I spotted smoke on the horizon, it was the first sign of rescue that we have seen ever since we crashed on this miserable island. We run to the top of the mountain to see that THE SIGNAL FIRE IS NOT SMOKING!! Sam and Eric left the fire unattended and died out!!! Jack and the hunters come back from their hunt and they manage to kill their first pig but the victory is VERY bittersweet.  Jack doesn’t even care that we missed our one chance at getting rescued and HE DOESN'T EVEN CARE!!

Jack, being the hot-head that he is, started to get mad at Piggy because he was mad at him for letting the fire die, so he hits Piggy and one of the lenses on his specs breaks! His glasses were our only way of starting the fire and now we only have one left. I'm so furious with Jack, that boy really needs to stop acting so crazy. We roast the pig and Jack refuses to give Piggy some for no reason, but Piggy stands up for himself. FINALLY! Simon, being generous as always shares his meat with Piggy. Jack and I are officially playing for opposite teams now.

The Beastie

          "The Beastie". To the Littluns it a more than just a nightmare trapped in their minds, but it's actually beast roaming the jungle while they sleep. Ralph, as the leader, doesn't believe that it's real, he says its just a nightmare and all part of their imagination. Piggy, being as smart as he is, thinks that the "beastie" doesn't exit because science that there are no such thing as monsters. Simon think that "beastie" is in all of them because everyone may be born with a good heart, but can become evil in time. Jack, well he doesn't care whether or not it is real, he just wants to kill it.

          Each one of their opinions are different, yet none of them really know if the "beastie" is real. I agree with Simon because I think that the "beastie" is just a metaphor for the inner beast inside all of the boys. So far, the only one showing beast-like behavior is Jack only because he has a short temper. If you really think about it, Simon's reasoning may actually have some logical standing behind it.

Chapter 3: Huts on the Beach

Dear Diary,

Everyone on this island is as lazy as Piggy! We need to build to shelters if we're going to survive on this island but everyone, but Simon, aren't helping at all. The hunters are supposed to be out hunting for me because some of the boys are craving meat but no one wants to corporate. Piggy was helping me but he got lazy and decided to lay down then build. Jack, being a hot-head as usual, gets mad because I bring up the fact that they didn't catch that pig last time.

Jack and some the other boys are avoiding the tasks by using hunting as an excuse to not do as told. Remember when I talked about the boy and his nightmares, well no everyone is a little scared and the Littluns are starting to get nightmare of the fire and "beastie". So to make us all on the same page, we all go swimming in the lagoon but we will still have the dislike of everything.

While we're relaxing, Simon takes the Littluns into the jungle to get some fruit from the trees. Simon told me that he wandered a little deeper into the jungle and found a peaceful quite place to just sit and think. So far today has been a little difficult, but I think that we all need some time to think and clear our heads about what'

s been happening lately.

Chapter 2: Fire on the Mountain

Dear Diary,

Today started off good because I came up with a really good rule where anyone who wants to talk has to be holding the conch shell at the meetings. Eh, am I good or am I good? Piggy, annoying as he is, gets mad because we haven't tried to find a way of this island which makes all the boys scared and worried. That boy has such a big mouth that it's CRAZY! One of the younger boys, with a mulberry-colored mark on his face, started to talk about a snakelike thing he called "beastie" that he saw the night before. Which causes even more fear with everyone, so the older boys had to try and calm them down and make them believe that there is no monster on the island. They tell the younger boys that the mulberry-colored marked boy was just having a nightmare.

Another one of my great ideas were for some of the boys to go to the top of the mountain and start a signal fire for passing ships and planes. We left Piggy behind because he was being annoying and not liking my decision as chief, but he didn’t want to be left behind so he came with us. At first it was hard to build the fire because rubbing the 2 sticks together wasn't really helping, but we took Piggy's glasses and used them to magnify the sun and start the fire. He was pretty upset, but at least we got our signal fire going. The fire burned out easily and Piggy started to get mad because we weren't listening to what he was saying, we probably just used the wrong wood.

We tried to start a signal fire one more time but since there were younger kids running around acting crazy, so I put Piggy in charge of taking names and keeping track of them. When we started the fire, the fire got way out of hand and it nearly burned the entire island! When we called a meeting to make sure that everyone was ok, one of the younger boys was missing. I was really mad at Piggy because he only had one simple job and he failed, miserably. I just hope that he's not dead.
